Update on the Science Related to Controversies about DID and Its Treatment

Bethany Brand Ph.D

Abstract:
The validity of dissociative identity disorder (DID) and the benefit of its treatment is once again in the spotlight. Trauma researchers have published compelling evidence showing that trauma causes DID and supporting the treatment of DID. In response, highly critical papers have been published by Fantasy Model proponents (also known as the Iatrogenic, Sociocognitive, and False Memory) about dissociation, DID and its treatment. Some authors argue that DID worsens when it is treated with DID-focused treatment. Clinicians and researchers need to be informed about the arguments and science underlying both perspectives. Dr. Brand will provide an overview of the controversy about DID and its treatment. She will then present the current research that indicates that DID-focused treatment that is consistent with expert consensus guidelines appears to be beneficial rather than harmful to patients.
